Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Mr. Sauli Niinistö, President of the Republic of Finland

The Secretary-General met today with H. E. Mr. Sauli Niinistö, President of the Republic of Finland.

The Secretary-General thanked Finland for its contribution to mediation and preventive diplomacy and its role as co-chair of the Group of Friends of Mediation. He reiterated his call for the strengthening of UN capacities in these areas.

The Secretary-General and President Niinistö addressed the increased movement of refugees and migrants towards Europe. They agreed that saving lives must be a priority.

They also discussed the current situation in Ukraine.

The Secretary-General and President Niinistö exchanged views on the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.
