The Secretary-General met today with a Parliamentary delegation of the Union of Myanmar led by H.E. Thura U Shwe Mann, Speaker of the Lower House of the Parliament.
They discussed Parliament’s significant role in the democratic transition and the Secretary-General encouraged continued progress toward constitutional reform, a credible election process, political dialogue on national reconciliation and the protection of human rights in order to ensure an inclusive society. The discussion also touched on important legislation debated in Parliament. The Secretary-General welcomed the draft nationwide ceasefire agreement concluded on 31 March and encouraged Parliament’s constructive engagement to help move forward the peace process.
