The Secretary-General met on Monday with H.E. Mr. Wang Yi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of China.
The Secretary-General congratulated China for its presidency of the Security Council and expressed his appreciation to the country for organising an open debate of the Security Council on the maintenance of international peace and security, reaffirming the commitment of the international community to the principles of the Charter of the United Nations.
The Secretary-General thanked the Foreign Minister for China's support to the Organization and welcomed proposals made by China on ways to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. The Secretary-General emphasised a number of priority areas for this year, including reaching agreements on combatting climate change and a new sustainable development agenda.
The Secretary-General and the Foreign Minister also discussed the situation in Myanmar, Syria, and the Iran nuclear issue.
