The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. Joseph Muscat, Prime Minister of Malta. The Secretary-General welcomed Malta’s contribution to the United Nations, including its hosting of several UN presences.
The Secretary-General and the Prime Minister exchanged views on the situation in Libya, including its impact on migration flows across the Mediterranean. The Secretary-General encouraged Malta to play a greater role in efforts to stabilize Libya. He underscored the need to respect the human rights and dignity of all migrants, regardless of their status, and commended Malta for its efforts to put an end to the detention of child asylum seekers.
The Secretary-General and the Prime Minister agreed on the need to sustain the momentum created at the Climate Summit in the lead-up to the Paris conference. They also exchanged views on the post-2015 development agenda and ongoing efforts to define sustainable development goals.
