The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon met today with H.E. Mr. Kim Sung-Hwan, Foreign Minister of the Republic of Korea (ROK). He commended the ROK Government’s solid contribution to the work of the United Nations. The Secretary-General particularly appreciated the strong commitment of the ROK Government to support his 5-year Action Agenda.  In this context, he expressed confidence in the ROK Government’s active participation at the upcoming United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, building on the 4th High-Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness the Korean Government hosted last November in Busan.
  
The Secretary-General looked forward to the Nuclear Security Summit, to be held in Seoul from 26 to 27 March. He commended the leadership role of the ROK Government in advancing the international community’s efforts to prevent nuclear terrorism and strengthen the global nuclear security and safety regime. 
 
The Secretary-General exchanged views with the Foreign Minister about outstanding issues related to the Korean Peninsula, including the nuclear issue and humanitarian concerns.  The Secretary-General welcomed the recent agreement between the United States and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) on initial steps towards the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. He emphasized the importance of faithful implementation of the steps to be taken by the DPRK. He hoped that the parties concerned step up their efforts to settle outstanding issues by peaceful means including dialogue. In this context, the Secretary-General underscored the importance of the inter-Korean dialogue and hoped for improved cross-border relations.
 
The Secretary-General reiterated his concerns about the severe food and nutrition problems of the vulnerable group in the DPRK. He thanked the ROK Government for its contribution to humanitarian assistance and expressed hope for more support from all donors.
 
The Secretary-General shared the deep concern with the Foreign Minister about the dislocated people from the DPRK. He encouraged the concerned parties to do their utmost to find a mutually agreeable solution. In doing so, he stressed the importance of giving priority to the international standards and humanitarian considerations for the well being of those persons.  The UN system stands ready to provide appropriate assistance as requested by the concerned parties.
