The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. Dmitry Medvedev, President of the Russian Federation, H.E. Mr. Sergey Lavrov, Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation, and Mr. Nikolai Bordyuzha, Secretary General of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).

The Secretary-General thanked the President and Foreign Minister for Russia's support for the United Nations.

They exchanged views on developments in the Middle East and North Africa, particularly the situation in Libya and the Middle East Peace Process. They also discussed the situations in Cote d''Ivoire, the Korean peninsula and the Western Balkans. The Secretary-General commended Russia for the ratification of the new START Treaty. They exchanged views on the need for stronger international standards for nuclear safety.

With regard to piracy, global governance, sustainable development and climate change, the Secretary-General and the President discussed opportunities for enhanced international cooperation.

With the Secretary General of the CSTO, the Secretary-General considered areas in which to intensify practical cooperation between the two organizations.
