Dear Friends,
I am delighted to welcome you to the third day of the 2023 ECOSOC Youth Forum, focusing on “Youth and the SDG Summit 2023”.
As we prepare for the SDG Summit in September, this session is a critical opportunity to listen and learn from young people. It is a critical opportunity for the United Nations to learn how to improve our ways of working with youth. It is a critical opportunity to place youth in the driving seat to securing a better future, an inclusive future; the Sustainable Development Goals.
At the halfway mark of the 2030 Agenda, the world is facing multiple and far-reaching crises that threaten lives and livelihoods.
To turn the tide on these worrisome trends and to orient the world on a trajectory to achieve sustainable development, immediate transformative and systemic action is needed, with the world’s 1.9 billion young people as torchbearers for change.
In the Decade of Action to deliver the SDGs, and in the lead up to the SDG Summit, we must acknowledge that youth have the energy, creativity and drive to take the lead on social, economic and environmental change. Little can be achieved without their meaningful inclusion.
The UN Youth Strategy, Youth2030, recognizes the importance of youth empowerment and engagement. It is transforming how the UN system is working with, and for, young people across the pillars of peace and security, human rights and sustainable development.
Since its launch in 2018, Youth2030 has seen a significant expansion, with 51 UN entities and 131 UN Country Teams now participating in its implementation. I want to thank Member States, young people and the UN system for the drive to advance Youth2030 as a catalyst to achieving the SDGs.
Today, you will hear about the progress achieved and key strategies for accelerating progress between now and 2030. I look forward to the rich discussions.
While engaging on these topics, I urge you to be mindful of three important questions:
i) How do we recognize young people's potential as changemakers and scale up their innovative solutions towards the SDGs?
ii) How do we prioritize the meaningful participation of young people in decision-making processes that affect their lives?
iii) How can we accelerate Youth2030 as the catalyst for transforming the UN’s work with and for youth and delivering on the SDGs?
Dear friends,
We have the vision, and we have the means. Now is the time to deliver. Together, we can create a better world for present and future generations.
Thank you.
