Deputy Secretary-General's Written Remarks at the Global Investors for Sustainable Development (GISD) Alliance

Statements | Amina J. Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General

Dear members of the GISD Alliance,

Dear GISD Alliance Co-Chairs Ms. Fourie and Mr. Viñals,

It is a pleasure to join you at the Fourth Annual Meeting of the GISD.

We meet here today at a critical moment.

From conflicts, climate catastrophe, growing energy challenges and increasing food insecurity, each crisis is pushing the Sustainable Development Goals further out of reach.

These are collective challenges. They will not be overcome without the leadership, advocacy and engagement of all actors, including the private sector.

We have all heard what we need to do and the commitments to engage – but they are not enough.

Time is against us and concrete actions are needed now.

We must shift the focus towards the investments needed to change the current trajectory of missing the 2030 targets.

During this session, I took note of the important contributions made by the GISD Alliance over the last year. As we look forward, I urge you to adopt the Secretary-General’s call to walk the talk, to make your support clear to political leaders, and strengthen synergies between climate action and the SDGs.

I would like to conclude this session by calling for your action in three interconnected areas.

First, engage your networks and leverage your partnerships to place the SDGs at the center of your business practices. We count on you to create enabling policy and regulatory frameworks that promote suitable investment and a just transition.

Second, scale up your work. You spoke this morning of the tools, policy engagements, and financing vehicles that you have introduced.

I urge you to focus now on scaling these up, recognizing that others may lack your level of knowledge and commitment.

Third, become champions for all of the SDGs.

Just as we saw the International Sustainability Standards Board adopt a “climate first” approach, we must drive action around a just transition to renewables in line with all the SDGs.

Ladies and gentlemen,

Thank you all once again for your commitment to the GISD Alliance, especially those who travelled to New York to be here with us today.

I would also like to express my gratitude to the two Co-Chairs for their excellent leadership.

I wish you success over the coming year and beyond as you work to scale up and align private finance and investment with the SDGs.

Thank you.
