Press Release: For Immediate Release

(New York, 21 December 2017)

I am encouraged by the constructive dialogue begun with the authorities of Myanmar during my visit to Naypyidaw and Yangon, from 14 to 17 December 2017, to address reports of conflict-related sexual violence.

I am grateful for the opportunity to meet the State Counsellor, Her Excellency Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, as well as the Minister for Home Affairs, the Minister for the Office of the Union Government and National Security Advisor, the Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement, the Inspector-General of Myanmar Armed Forces, the Chief Coordinator of the Union Enterprise for Humanitarian Assistance, Resettlement and Development in Rakhine, and the President of the Myanmar Women’s Affairs Federation. I also engaged with the Chairman and representatives of the National Human Rights Commission and a member of the Advisory Board on Rakhine State.

On the basis of these consultations, I look forward to the swift adoption of a Joint Communiqué of the Government of Myanmar and the United Nations on the prevention and response to conflict-related sexual violence, in accordance with Security Council resolution 2106 (2013). This will provide a framework for future cooperation and provision of technical advice and assistance, particularly to judicial and security sector actors, similar to the support that my Office is providing in several other conflict-affected countries.
