Statement by the Committee on Usama Bin Laden

The Security Council’s Al-Qaida and Taliban Sanctions Committee welcomes the news on 1 May 2011 that Usama Bin Laden will never again be able to perpetrate acts of terrorism and refers to the Presidential Statement of the Security Council dated 2 May 2011 in this regard.

The Committee underlines that the name of Usama bin Laden continues to appear on the Consolidated List of individuals and entities associated with Al-Qaida and the Taliban and stresses that the assets freeze and other relevant measures most recently set out in Security Council resolution 1904 (2009) continue to apply to the name of Usama bin Laden.

The Committee wishes to take this opportunity to remind States that they should continue to implement these measures in accordance with their obligations under the Charter of the United Nations.

The Committee recalls that it has been requested by the Security Council to oversee the implementation of the assets freeze and other relevant measures to be applied by States against Usama bin Laden and individuals and entities associated with him, as designated by the Committee, including those associated with the Al-Qaida organization.

The Committee will continue to fulfil the tasks assigned to it by the Security Council while at the same time assessing the implications which these events will have on the changing nature of the threat posed by Al-Qaida and, as a consequence, on the future work of the Committee.
