Under the Presidency of Japan, the Security Council held two signature events: • A high-level open debate on Peacebuilding and sustaining peace (13 and 19 March), focused on promoting conflict prevention – empowering all actors including women and youth (S/2024/210). • A high-level briefing on Maintenance of international peace and security (18 March), focused on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. The meeting was presided by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan.

Under the Presidency of Guyana, the Security Council held one signature event: • A high-level open debate on maintenance of international peace and security (13-14 February), focused on the impact of climate change and food insecurity (S/2024/146). The President of Guyana presided over the meeting and the Secretary-General provided a briefing.

January 2024

Under the Presidency of France, the Security Council did not hold any signature events. On 23 and 24 January, the Council convened a high-level open debate on the Middle East, including the Palestinian question, which was presided over by the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs of France.

December 2023

Under the Presidency of Ecuador, the Security Council held two signature events: • A high-level open debate on Threats to international peace and security (7 December), focusing on transnational organized crime (S/2023/933). The President of Ecuador presided over the meeting and the Secretary-General briefed. • A high-level open debate on Small arms (15 December), focusing on addressing the threat posed by diversion, illicit trafficking and misuse of small arms and light weapons and their ammunition to peace and security (S/2023/954). The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility of Ecuador presided over the meeting.

November 2023

Under the Presidency of China, the Security Council held one signature event: • An open debate on Maintenance of international peace and security (20 November), focused on promote sustaining peace through common development (S/2023/870).

Under the Presidency of Brazil, the Security Council held two signature events: • A high-level open debate on Maintenance of international peace and security (20 October), focused on peace through dialogue and the contribution of regional, subregional and bilateral arrangements to the prevention and peaceful resolution of disputes (S/2023/732). • A high-level open debate on Women and Peace and Security (25-26 October) focused on women’s participation in international peace and security (S/2023/733). The Minister for Foreign Affairs of Brazil presided over the meeting.
