UNDSS structure at glance

The United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) is structured to ensure a coordinated and effective response to the diverse security challenges faced by the UN system worldwide. The Department is led by an Under-Secretary-General (USG), supported by an Assistant Secretary-General (ASG).

The Office of the Under-Secretary-General provides overall leadership and strategic direction. It includes the Chief of Staff, as well as functions covering Insight and Accountability, Strategic Communications, and Policy, Intergovernmental and Partnerships, which also oversees resource mobilization.

The Office of the Assistant Secretary-General manages critical support services through the Executive Office, which covers human resources, budget and finance, logistics, and general administration. It also houses the Gender Equality and Inclusivity Unit, ensuring that these priorities are mainstreamed across UNDSS operations.

Operational delivery is anchored in two divisions and a branch: the Division of Field Operations, the Division of Headquarters Security and Safety Services, and the Specialized Service Branch.
