70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,

Today we celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

A cornerstone document of the United Nations, the Declaration affirms unequivocally that all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.

The Declaration is inextricably tied to development, setting out the rights of all to a standard of living adequate for health and well-being, including the right to education, the right to work and the right to social security.

Fulfilling these rights requires the need to overcome discrimination and inequalities and deliver on the transformative 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals provide the global community with a roadmap towards inclusive development that is strongly anchored in universal human rights.

The core principle of the 2030 Agenda, to leave no one behind, requires that we redouble our efforts to eradicate extreme poverty, create decent jobs, provide access to clean water, quality healthcare and education, and promote inclusion and participation of vulnerable groups to all dimensions of life. It requires that we view peace, sustainable development and human rights as interlinked and interdependent.

Working with Member States to implement the Sustainable Development Goals is a top priority for the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA). We will strengthen this integral part of our work in 2019, when the High-level Political Forum will convene both under the auspices of ECOSOC in July, and under the auspices of the General Assembly at the Summit level in September. Heads of State and Government will review how far we have come in realizing the SDGs and discuss actions for accelerating the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

Ultimately, achieving freedom from want, freedom from fear, and a healthy environment for all people without discrimination, is what we all want. At this 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, delivering on the 2030 Agenda will be our collective commitment to these ideals.

Let us continue to work together for human rights, inclusive development, dignity and peace worldwide. Thank you.
