On 1 August, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres appointed Pablo Ruiz Hiebra of Spain as the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Uruguay, with the host Government’s approval.

In Myanmar, at least 930 people, many of them women and children, have been killed at the hands of security forces since 1 February, while thousands more have been injured, the United Nations team there reports.  At least 3,000 remain under detention, as the protracted crisis impacts humanitarian access to people in need.

In Sudan’s Khartoum state — where food security has deteriorated due to inflation and economic decline — the World Food Programme (WFP) launched its first programme providing nutritional support to 175,000 pregnant and nursing women and children under five.  Precautions are in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
