Following are UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed’s remarks, as prepared for delivery, at the ministerial breakfast on “Maximizing Finance for Development in Least Developed Countries:  The Case for Sustainable Energy”, in Washington, D.C., today:

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres today announced the launch of a global task force charged with recommending strategies to harness the potential of financial technology to advance the Sustainable Development Goals.  The Task Force on Digital Financing consists of leaders from a range of sectors from both developed and developing countries.

The Security Council, acting unanimously at the outset of a far-ranging open debate today, adopted a resolution aimed at further crystalizing the protection of children in armed conflicts, including by combating their recruitment by non-State armed groups and treating formerly recruited children primarily as victims.

As terrorist groups and their ever‑evolving tactics become increasingly diffuse and creative, United Nations counter-terrorism bodies — including the Security Council’s committees established to combat the phenomenon — must also remain flexible and adapt quickly, the 15‑member organ heard today, as the committees’ chairs provided an overview of their recent work.

A new United Nations report has documented the immense suffering of civilians in South Sudan’s Western Equatoria region, where 900 people were abducted and 24,000 forced to flee their homes during a surge in violence between April and August of this year.

Commemorating the International Day against Nuclear Tests today, delegates in the General Assembly evoked the catastrophic consequences and suffering caused by the testing and use of nuclear weapons, as they urged countries that have not done so to sign the Comprehensive Nuclear‑Test‑Ban Treaty.

Full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development would require reaching those lagging furthest behind as an urgent priority, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said today, as the Economic and Social Council continued the ministerial segment of its High-Level Political Forum.

Exports had remained stagnant or drastically declined due to low world prices, failure to adapt to changing markets and policies penalizing their traditional activity, Maldives’ delegate told the Second Committee (Economic and Financial) today as it began its debate on macroeconomic policy questions.
