The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan has expressed anger at the murder of a staff member today in Kandahar. The Secretary-General’s Special Representative, Nicholas Haysom, has confirmed that the staff member, Toorpaki Ulfat, was a respected human rights defender. Initial reports indicate that she was killed by gunfire from unknown persons on a motorcycle.

In light of the bribery accusations of former General Assembly President John Ashe, the Secretary-General is asking the Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS) to begin an audit of the United Nations dealings with and use of any funds received from the Global Sustainability Foundation and the Sun Kian Ip Group.

The General Assembly today adopted, by a recorded vote of 99 in favour to none against, with 10 abstentions (Bolivia, Chad, Cuba, Nicaragua, Russian Federation, Sudan, Syria, United Republic of Tanzania, Venezuela and Zimbabwe), a resolution on the report of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The General Assembly today elected 23 members to the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) and one member to the Economic and Social Council, while appointing members of the Committee on Conferences and the Joint Inspection Unit.

The Secretary-General announced this morning the appointment of Martin Kobler of Germany as his Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) to succeed Bernardino León of Spain. The leadership transition will take place in the coming days.

The Secretary-General supported last Friday’s Syrian peace talks in Vienna while his Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, spent the last two days in Damascus discussing with the Syrian Government the conference’s outcomes and the importance of early confidence-building steps to maintain the spirit of the talks.

Many speakers emphasized the invaluable nature of intergovernmental negotiations to reform the Security Council, and suggested a range of possible changes to its membership, while discussing the future of the veto power, as the General Assembly today held its annual debate on Council reform and the question of equitable representation in the 15-member body.

Accepting a medal of honour at the Carlos III University of Madrid, the Secretary-General told students he looked to them and youth across Spain to help usher in a new future for the country and the world by putting people first. He also urged them to focus on the potential of a green economy.
