In observance of the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade (25 March), as well as the final year of the International Decade for People of African Descent (2015-2024), the United Nations will host two new exhibits highlighting the horrors of slavery and acts of resistance: “Who were the enslaved? Commemorating lives under enslavement at the Cape of Good Hope”, 19 March-25 April, Visitors’ Lobby, United Nations Headquarters, and “Ibo Landing”, 25-28 March, Vienna Café, United Nations Headquarters.

The Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf held its sixtieth session at United Nations Headquarters from 22 January to 8 March 2024. The plenary parts of the session were held from 29 January to 2 February and from 26 February to 1 March. The remainder of the session was devoted to the technical examination of submissions at the premises of the Division, including geographic information systems laboratories and other technical facilities.

The members of the Security Council were briefed on 6 March by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH), María Isabel Salvador, on the situation in Haiti. The Permanent Representative of Kenya, the Permanent Representative of Haiti, and the Permanent Representative of Jamaica, on behalf of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), participated in the meeting under Rule 37.

In preparation for the fourth Review Conference in June 2024 on the Programme of Action to Prevent, Combat and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All Its Aspects (PoA), States from Latin America and the Caribbean will gather over the coming two weeks to discuss regional priorities, as well as challenges and opportunities, to combat small arms trafficking.
