Elections ‘Important Step’ in Mozambique’s Democratic Process, Secretary-General Says, Appealing for Unity among Political Leaders, Supporters to Further Peace

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres:

The Secretary-General has been closely following developments related to the 15 October general elections in Mozambique.  Mozambique has come a long way in its efforts to consolidate peace with the signing of the recent peace agreements.  These elections are an important step in the country’s democratic process.

The Secretary-General appeals to all Mozambicans, including political leaders at all levels and their supporters, to continue working together to further peace and stability during this important phase in the country’s history.
