Activities of Secretary-General in China, 2-4 September

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres arrived in Beijing from New York on Sunday, 2 September, in the afternoon.

In the early evening, he met with Xi Jinping, President of China, in the Great Hall of the People.  Following that meeting, the Secretary-General was given a tour of the Beijing Times Art Museum.  He then had dinner with Ambassador Ma Zhaoxu, Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations, as well as with members of his delegation.

On Monday morning, 3 September, the Secretary-General met the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki.

He then met with staff at the United Nations House and also met with the United Nations country team.  While at the United Nations House he also had two interviews, one with China Central Television and one with China.org.cn.

In the afternoon he met with the President of the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire, Alassane Ouattara.  He also met João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, President of the Republic of Angola.

In the late afternoon, the Secretary-General met with State Counsellor and Minister for Foreign Affairs Wang Yi at the Anhui Hall of the Great Hall of the People.  This was followed by the welcoming ceremony of the China-Africa Forum.  He then delivered remarks at the opening ceremony of the Forum.  (See Press Release SG/SM/19188.)

He also took part in the group photo with the President of China and African leaders present, and finally he attended the welcoming banquet and gala evening.

Early on 4 September, the Secretary-General left Beijing.
