Efforts Must Narrow Gaps to Ensure Equality for All, Secretary-General Says, in Message at High-level Opening of European Parliament’s Human Rights Week

Following is the text of UN Secretary‑General António Guterres’ video message to the high‑level opening of the European Parliament’s Human Rights Week, to be held in Brussels from 19 to 23 November:

I am delighted to convey my best wishes as you celebrate the seventieth anniversary of one of the most exceptional documents ever conceived:  the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.  This landmark text proclaims our shared vision of human progress and well‑being.

But, despite gains since 1948, too many gaps remain.  Today we are seeing a dangerous erosion of fundamental rights and freedoms, democratic principles and the rule of law.  Refugees, migrants and minorities face rising hatred and attacks.

We need to strengthen our commitment to ensure all human rights for all people.  This is a goal unto itself and crucial for advancing peace and sustainable development.

I thank the European Union and its Member States for your steadfast partnership in this collective endeavour.  Thank you.
