Secretary-General Announces Intention to Appoint Fabrizio Hochschild of Chile Assistant Secretary-General for Strategic Coordination in Executive Office

The following senior staff appointment was announced on 23 December 2016 by then-Secretary-General-designate António Guterres:

I am pleased to announce that I will be appointing Fabrizio Hochschild of Chile as my Assistant Secretary-General for Strategic Coordination in the Executive Office.

Reporting to the Chef de Cabinet, Mr. Hochschild will work closely with other members of my team to support me in ensuring coherence across the political, peacekeeping, development, humanitarian, human rights and rule-of-law portfolios.

Mr. Hochschild is currently serving as Deputy Special Representative for the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), to which post he was appointed in July 2016.  He previously served as Deputy to the Secretary-General’s Special Adviser for the Summit on Addressing Large Movements of Refugees and Migrants.

Between 2013 and 2016, he served as United Nations Resident Coordinator, Humanitarian Coordinator and Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Colombia.  He was the Director of the Field Personnel Division within the Department of Field Support in New York from 2010 to 2012, and Chief of Field Operations and Technical Cooperation in the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Geneva from 2005 until 2009.

Having begun his United Nations career in 1988 with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Sudan, Mr. Hochschild served in subsequent postings with UNHCR, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and in peacekeeping.

Mr. Hochschild’s other assignments included postings to Jerusalem (1990-1991), Bosnia and Herzegovina (1991-1992), Geneva (1993-1996), New York (1998-1999), Timor-Leste (2000), Serbia (2001-2003) and the United Republic of Tanzania (2003-2005).

He is a graduate of the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom.

Born in 1963, he is married and has three children.
