Secretary-General, Condemning Attack on Mali Mission Camp, Says Incident Will Not Alter United Nations’ Determination to Support Malian People

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:

The Secretary-General strongly condemns the attack on a camp of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) that took place today in Kidal, killing one peacekeeper from the Chadian contingent and wounding four others.

This incident follows other attacks against United Nations personnel and contractors in the Kidal and Gao regions, including rocket attacks against MINUSMA camps and attacks against vehicles using mines and improvised explosive devices.

These attacks will not alter the determination of the United Nations to support the Malian people in its search for peace.  This latest attack only highlights the urgency of reaching a political settlement to end the conflict and enable the full restoration of State authority across the entire Malian territory.

The Secretary-General expresses his sincere condolences to the family of the peacekeeper who was killed and his sympathies to the Government and people of Chad, and wishes a full and speedy recovery to those injured.
