Secretary-General Appoints Jens Anders Toyberg-Frandzen of Denmark


Interim Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs

 


United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today announced the appointment of Jens Anders Toyberg-Frandzen of Denmark as Assistant Secretary-General ad interim for Political Affairs.


Mr. Toyberg-Frandzen will succeed Oscar Fernandez-Taranco of Argentina, who will take up his new appointment as Assistant Secretary-General for Peacebuilding Support with effect from 1 November.  The Secretary-General is grateful to Mr. Fernandez-Taranco for his dedication and commitment to the Organization during his term as Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs.  A search for a permanent Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs is ongoing.


Until recently, Mr. Toyberg-Frandzen served as United Nations Resident Coordinator and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative ad interim in Ukraine, from July to September 2014.  He also served as Resident Coordinator and Resident Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina from 2003 to 2006.  From 2006 to 2010, he headed the UNDP Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People and later on served as Acting United Nations Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Yemen, from 2011 to 2012.  Mr. Toyberg-Frandzen is familiar with the Department of Political Affairs through his work as the Executive Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Integrated Peacebuilding Office in Sierra Leone (UNIPSIL) from 2012 to 2014.


Mr. Toyberg-Frandzen holds a Master of Science in Economics and Management from Aarhus University in Denmark.
