Economic and Social Council Fills Bureau Vacancy by Electing Vice-President

 

from Latin American and Caribbean States

 


The Economic and Social Council today elected a representative from the Latin American and Caribbean States as a Vice-President of its Bureau.


Elected by acclamation to replace Carlos Enrique García González (El Salvador), María Emma Mejía Vélez (Colombia) will begin her term immediately and serve until July 2015.  She will be responsible for the Council’s operational activities segment during its 2014 session.


Upon her election, Ms. Mejia expressed her commitment to strengthening the Council’s role in the post-2015 development agenda, and to making the organ a more relevant, important part of the United Nations.


The Bureau comprises the Council President and four Vice-Presidents.
