Secretary-General Appoints Lieutenant General Maqsood Ahmed of Pakistan

Military Adviser for Peacekeeping Operations

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced today the appointment of Lieutenant General Maqsood Ahmed of Pakistan as the Military Adviser for Peacekeeping Operations, replacing Senegal’s Lieutenant General Babacar Gaye, whose tour of duty ended on 8 July.

During his tour of duty with the Department of Peacekeeping Operations, Lieutenant General Gaye played a key role in establishing the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), as well as the brief observer mission in Syria, and in deploying the Force Intervention Brigade in the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO).  The Secretary-General is grateful for his dedicated and effective service, and wishes him well in his current assignment as the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Integrated Peacebuilding Office in the Central African Republic (BINUCA).

Lieutenant General Ahmed recently completed his duties as a corps commander in Pakistan’s armed forces, an appointment that he had held since February 2013.  In his long and distinguished career, he has held a number of other senior appointments, including Commander of the 12th Infantry Division in Muree (2008-2010).  He has held a combination of command and staff appointments, as well as a tour of duty with the then-United Nations Organization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUC) in 2005-2006.

A graduate of Quaid-i-Azam University in Islamabad, Lieutenant General Ahmed was born in 1957.  He is married and has three children.
