Organization Issues ‘Yearbook of the United Nations’,

Covering Global Activities in 2009

The United Nations issued the sixty-third volume of Yearbook of the United Nations, covering the Organization’s global activities in 2009.

With its comprehensive coverage of political and security matters, human rights issues, economic and social questions, legal issues, and institutional, administrative and budgetary matters, the Yearbook stands as the authoritative reference work on the activities and concerns of the Organization.

Fully indexed, the 33-chapter, 1,577-page Yearbook includes the texts of all General Assembly, Security Council and Economic and Social Council resolutions, as well as summaries of all decisions, uniquely placing them in a narrative context of United Nations consideration and action.

“This Yearbook represents our work through what we have done, what we advocate, and what we ourselves are called to do,” Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says in the Foreword.  “It is our own witness to the history that is shaped by the efforts of the United Nations.”

The sixty-third volume shows how the United Nations responded in 2009 to conflict situations and unconstitutional changes of government in different parts of the world, while supporting peacebuilding, democratic processes and economic development in numerous post-conflict countries.

It also relates United Nations achievements in helping to advance human rights, formulating development policy and facilitating international economic cooperation — especially with a view to mitigating the effects of the continuing global financial crisis — as well as in providing humanitarian assistance to those in need.

All volumes of the Yearbook from the 1946–47 (Vol. 1) to the 2007 edition (Vol. 61) can be accessed online at unyearbook.un.org.

Yearbook of the United Nations 2009, volume 63, 1578 pp., ISBN: 978-92-1-101275-0, can be obtained through bookstores worldwide, and ordered from United Nations Publications, 300 East 42nd Street, 9th floor, New York, New York 10017, United States of America, or from un.org/publications.
