Secretary-General Appoints Luiz Loures of Brazil Deputy Executive Director,

 


United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced the appointment of Luiz Loures of Brazil as Deputy Executive Director, Programme, Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).


He succeeds Paul De Lay of the United States.  The Secretary-General is grateful to Mr. De Lay for his important contributions to the response to the HIV epidemic over the course of nearly a decade in leadership positions within UNAIDS.


Mr. Loures brings to this position over 28 years of experience in health and development, specifically in programmatic, policy, and clinical issues at the centre of the AIDS response.  Prior to this appointment, he served in various positions at UNAIDS, including as Director, Political and Public Affairs and Director, Executive Office, from 2009 to 2012.  Mr. Loures joined UNAIDS at the time of its inception in 1996.  Previously, he was instrumental in the establishment of the national AIDS programme of Brazil and began his career as a critical care physician and served as chief physician, AIDS Unit, at the Hospital Joao XXIII in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
