Secretary-General Appoints Rodney Bent Director of United Nations

 

Information Centre in Washington, D.C.

 


United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Rodney Bent Director of the United Nations Information Centre in Washington, D.C.  He assumed his new duties on 26 January.


Mr. Bent has 33 years of experience in the public and private sectors, serving most recently as a Senior Adviser to the United States Deputy Secretary of State, whom he advised on the Quadrennial Diplomacy and Development Review on management and budget issues.  From 2009 to 2011, he was an Executive Adviser at Booz Allen Hamilton with responsibility for international development and health issues.


Before that, Mr. Bent worked as Acting Chief Executive Officer and Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Millennium Challenge Corporation, where he managed a federal agency that signed grant agreements amounting to nearly $7 billion with more than 35 low-income countries.  He also served as the corporation’s Vice-President for Policy and International Relations from 2005 to 2006.


From 2004 to 2005, Mr. Bent worked on the House Appropriations Committee in the United States Congress.  He also served in Baghdad as senior adviser to the Iraqi Ministries of Finance and Planning from 2003 to 2004.  Before that, he worked at the United States Office of Management and Budget.  As its Deputy Associate Director for International Affairs and the senior career executive in charge of international programmes from 1998 to 2003, he prepared budget, management and legislative recommendations for a wide range of agencies, including the United Nations.


Earlier in his career, Mr. Bent was an Assistant Vice-President at Bankers Trust Company from 1982 to 1983, and an international economist at the United States Treasury Department between 1978 and 1982.


A national of the United States, he holds a Master of Business Administration from the Cornell University Graduate School of Business and Public Administration and a Master of Arts from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.


Mr. Bent is married and has a son and a daughter.
