Biographical Note


New Permanent Representative of Lao People’s Democratic Republic Presents Credentials

The new Permanent Representative of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic to the United Nations, Saleumxay Kommasith, today presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.


Until his appointment, Mr. Kommasith was Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs from 2011.  Between 2007 and 2011, he served as Director-General of the Department of International Organizations in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, having previously served as Deputy Director-General since 2004.  From 2003 to 2004, he was Director of the Department’s United Nations Division.


Mr. Kommasith was Second Secretary in his country’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York from 2000 to 2003, having previously served as Deputy Director in the Western Europe Division of the Foreign Ministry’s Europe-America Department since 1998.  From 1994 to 1996, he was the Department’s Desk Officer for the United States, having held the post of Australia Desk Officer from 1992 to 1994.


The holder of a master’s degree in international relations from Moscow State University of International Relations, Mr. Kommasith also has a Master of Arts in international study and development from Monash University in Melbourne, Australia.


Born on 31 October 1968 in Huaphan, he is married and has two daughters.
