United Nations-African Union Joint Task Force on Peace and Security

Holds Fifth Consultative Meeting in New York on 28 September

 

On 28 September 2012, the United Nations-African Union Joint Task Force on Peace and Security held its fifth consultative meeting at United Nations Headquarters in New York, on the margins of the sixty-seventh session of the United Nations General Assembly.  The African Union Commission and the United Nations Secretariat were represented, respectively, by Commissioner Ramtane Lamamra (Peace and Security), and the Under-Secretaries-General Jeffrey Feltman (Political Affairs), Hervé Ladsous (Peacekeeping Operations) and Ameerah Haq (Field Support).  They were accompanied by other senior officials from the two organizations.

The Joint Task Force reviewed the outcomes of the high-level meetings on the situations in the Sahel, including Mali, Somalia, and the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo held in the margins of the General Assembly.  The Joint Task Force also examined joint efforts and progress made in addressing the threat posed by the Lord’s Resistance Army.  The Joint Task Force agreed on a series of follow-up measures to further strengthen cooperation and ensure greater coherence in the partnership between the United Nations and the African Union towards lasting peace and stability, within the framework of Chapter VIII of the United Nations Charter, and in support of regional efforts.

The next meeting of the Joint Task Force will take place in Addis Ababa in January/February 2013, on the margins of the next African Union Summit, and in the context of the fiftieth anniversary of the continental organization.
