Secretary-General Congratulates Liberian People on Presidential Run-off Election,

 

Calls on Stakeholders to Accept Outcome, Work Together to Resolve Pending Issues

 


The following statement was issued today by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:


The Secretary-General congratulates the Liberian people for exercising their right to vote in the presidential run-off election on 8 November.  He commends the national authorities for conducting free, fair and transparent elections. 


The Secretary-General deplores the violence which took place on 7 November and welcomes the creation of a Special Independent Commission of Inquiry to investigate the incident.


The Secretary-General calls upon the Liberian stakeholders to accept the outcome of the elections and to work together to resolve any outstanding issues.  He emphasizes the importance of a continued dialogue on national reconciliation.
