Secretary-General Commends People of Cape Verde for Successful Presidential

 

Run-Off Election, Hails Jorge Carlos Fonseca’s Victory

 


The following statement was issued today by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:


The Secretary-General welcomes the holding of the presidential election in Cape Verde on 21 August, which was widely acclaimed by international observers as peaceful and credible.  He congratulates Jorge Carlos Fonseca for winning the run-off election, and wishes him all success in the performance of his new functions.


The Secretary-General also commends the people of Cape Verde for participating in the voting in an orderly manner, which testifies to their commitment to preserving and enhancing the country’s long-standing tradition of democracy and good governance.  The Secretary-General expresses the readiness of the United Nations to continue supporting the people and the Government of Cape Verde in their efforts to promote peace and development in their country and in the subregion.
