Secretary-General, in Message for Conference of Asian Political Parties,

Urges Action, Cooperation to Bolster Uneven Economic Recovery

Following is the text of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s video message to the International Conference of Asian Political Parties in Beijing today, 13 July:

Excellencies, distinguished political party leaders, ladies and gentlemen, I am pleased to greet this International Conference of Asian Political Parties.  Your focus on poverty alleviation is timely indeed.  In September, world leaders will gather in New York for a Summit on the Millennium Development Goals.

The world and the Asia region continue to deal with the fallout from the global financial crisis.  There are encouraging signs, but recovery is uneven.  It is precarious.  We need concrete action and cooperation at every level.  You have come together to share experiences and forge solutions.  This is vital.

Asia and the Pacific is home to some of the world’s largest and most dynamic economies.  Many millions have been lifted out of poverty.  But far too many remain.  Now is the time to invest in inclusive growth — in green growth — and in education, health and the empowerment of women.

I look forward to your input as we prepare for the MDG Summit.

I wish you all the best.

Thank you for your work.
