Secretary-General Welcomes Action Plan to Advance Three Pillars

of Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty over Next Five Years

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:

The Secretary-General welcomes the successful outcome of the 2010 NPT Review Conference, which adopted an action plan to advance nuclear disarmament, non‑proliferation and the peaceful uses of nuclear energy over the next five years.  A strong spirit of compromise and cooperation has delivered a significant agreement to build a safer and more secure world.

The Secretary-General congratulates the President of the Conference, Ambassador Libran Cabactulan (Philippines), and commends the States parties for finding common ground to further strengthen the NPT as the cornerstone of the global nuclear non-proliferation regime and the essential foundation towards nuclear disarmament.

The Secretary-General believes that the action plan lays a solid foundation to further strengthen the Treaty and address the challenges that lie ahead.  The agreement on concrete actions will advance all three pillars of the Treaty — disarmament, non-proliferation and peaceful use of nuclear energy.  He welcomes the firm commitment of the nuclear-weapon States to advance their efforts to eliminate all nuclear weapons.  He also welcomes the strong commitment of the States parties to prevent nuclear proliferation and nuclear terrorism.

The Secretary-General looks forward to the cooperation of the States parties as he follows through on the initiatives outlined in the final document.  In this regard, he particularly welcomes the agreement on a process leading to full implementation of the 1995 resolution on the establishment of a Middle East zone free of weapons of mass destruction and their means of delivery.

The Secretary-General encourages States parties to translate all of their commitments into concrete action.  He looks forward to working with the international community toward realizing the common goal of a world without nuclear weapons.  As Secretary-General, he will spare no effort to assist the States parties in implementing their agreement.
