The following Security Council press statement was issued today by Council President Vitaly Churkin (Russian Federation):

The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the attacks on United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) peacekeepers in Kirumba on 18 August, which resulted in the deaths of three Indian soldiers and left at least six more wounded.

The members of the Security Council expressed their condolences to the families of those killed in the attacks, as well as to the Government of India.  They encouraged the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo to ensure that the perpetrators of such attacks are swiftly brought to justice.

The members of the Security Council reiterated their full support for MONUSCO and demanded that all parties cooperate fully with the operations of MONUSCO.
