Security Council Press Statement on Iraq

 


The following Security Council press statement was read out today by Council President Vitaly Churkin (Russian Federation):


The members of the Security Council received a briefing today from the Secretary-General’s Special Representative on the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).


The members of the Security Council strongly urge Iraq’s newly elected members of the Council of Representatives to act in accordance with the Iraqi Constitution and in support of the national interest and form, as quickly as possible, a Government that is inclusive and represents the will of the Iraqi people and their hope for a strong, independent, unified and democratic Iraq.  The members of the Security Council underline their full support for UNAMI, headed by the Secretary-General’s Special Representative, consistent with its mandate, to support the Government formation process.


The members of the Security Council condemn the recent terrorist attacks.  The members of the Security Council reiterate that no terrorist act can reverse the path towards peace and prosperity, which is supported by the people and the Government of Iraq and the international community.
