Secretary-General Offers ‘Heartfelt’ Condolences to Families, Friends of Peacekeepers

 

Killed in Crash of United Nations Mission Plane in Haiti

 


The following statement was issued today by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:


The United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) confirms that a Uruguayan CASA-212 military aircraft carrying 11 crew and passengers from Uruguay and Jordan went down in the area of Fonds-Verrettes, approximately 45 kilometres from Port-au-Prince.


The aircraft was on a regular reconnaissance flight.  The crash site has been secured by the MINUSTAH police.  The United Nations confirms that all 11 crew members and passengers aboard were killed, and the bodies will be transported back to Port-au-Prince.


The Secretary-General extends his heartfelt condolences to the family members, friends and colleagues of these brave peacekeepers who lost their lives in the service of peace.
