nuclear test as ‘clear and strong message’, calls for full compliance

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:

The Secretary-General welcomes the adoption of resolution 1874 (2009) on the recent nuclear test by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

Acting unanimously and agreeing on credible measures, the members of the Security Council have sent today a clear and strong message to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.  The Secretary-General hopes that the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and all other Member States will fully comply with the measures contained in the resolution.

At the same time, the Secretary-General reiterates his conviction that all differences should be resolved in a peaceful manner through dialogue.  In this regard, he calls upon the concerned parties to refrain from taking any measures that can exacerbate tensions in the region and to exert their best efforts to re-engage in dialogue, including through the Six-Party Talks.

The Secretary-General will spare no effort in facilitating the implementation of the resolution, which will contribute to achieving de-nuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, as well as peace and stability in the region and beyond.
