Secretary-General Names Georg Charpentier ( Finland) Deputy Special


Representative, Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan

 


United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Georg Charpentier of Finland as his Deputy Special Representative for the Sudan and United Nations Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in that country.


He will replace Ameerah Haq, who has been appointed Special Representative for Timor-Leste.  The Secretary-General is grateful to Ms. Haq for her dedicated service during her tenure with the United Nations Mission in the Sudan.


Mr. Charpentier brings to the position extensive humanitarian and development experience, especially in African issues.  He has served with the Organization since 1984 and his latest post was Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General and United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Côte d’Ivoire.


He has also served as United Nations Resident Coordinator and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative in Burkina Faso; United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Burundi; Senior Deputy Resident Representative in Ethiopia; and UNDP Resident Representative a.i. and Humanitarian Coordinator a.i. in the Congo.  Previously, he has been Deputy Resident Representative in Lesotho and Sao Tome and Principe, and Assistant Resident Representative in Mauritania.


From 2002 to 2004, Mr. Charpentier was the UNDP Deputy Director of the Bureau for Crisis Prevention and Recovery in Geneva, where he participated in several inter-agency missions covering transition and recovery, small arms and demobilization in Somalia, Sudan, Liberia and Côte d’Ivoire.  He was also seconded for two years to the World Food Programme (WFP) at the secretariat of the Programme de Restructuration du Marché Céréalier in Mali.  While serving as Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Burkina Faso, he undertook a three month mission in 2006 to help prepare for the creation of the United Nations Integrated Office in Burundi (BINUB).


Mr. Charpentier obtained a master’s degree in economics from the Swedish School of Economics, University of Helsinki, Finland.


Born in El Salvador in 1956, he is married and has three children.
