TSUNAMI WHICH HIT SOLOMON ISLANDS, PAPUA NEW GUINEA


The following statement was issued today by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:


The Secretary-General is deeply concerned by the potential consequences of the earthquake and tsunami that hit the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea on 2 April 2007.


He extends his deepest condolences to the families of those who have been killed, injured or rendered homeless.


The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has a team ready to deploy to the Solomon Islands and has offered assistance to the Government.
