SECRETARY-GENERAL APPOINTS MARTA RUEDAS OF SPAIN

 

AS DEPUTY SPECIAL COORDINATOR FOR LEBANON

 


United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today announced the appointment of Marta Ruedas of Spain as Deputy Special Coordinator for Lebanon.  Ms. Ruedas will also serve as the United Nations Resident Coordinator.


Ms. Ruedas has served the United Nations for nearly 20 years in increasingly senior positions in the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), both in New York and in the field.  Since 2003, she has been Deputy Director of the Regional Bureau for Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States.


Earlier in her career, Ms. Ruedas served as Special Assistant to the Administrator of UNDP.  She served as UNDP Resident Coordinator/Resident Representative on two occasions, namely in Bulgaria (2001-2003) and in Sao Tomé and Príncipe (1991-2001).  Ms. Ruedas has also served UNDP in Bolivia, Kyrgyzstan, the Republic of Georgia, Nepal, Mongolia and Mexico.


Ms. Ruedas has a Master of International Affairs degree from Columbia University, a Bachelor of Arts from Cornell University, and a diploma in Russian studies from the Pushkin Institute in Moscow.
