Secretary-General Appoints Major General Ian Campbell Gordon of Australia Chief


of Staff of United Nations Truce Supervision Organization


United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan has appointed Major General Ian Campbell Gordon of Australia as Chief of Staff of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO).  General Gordon will replace Major General Clive Lilley of New Zealand who will relinquish the post on 30 November 2006.


General Gordon was commissioned in the Australian Army in 1973.  During his career, he has progressed through a variety of operational command and staff appointments at the tactical, operational and strategic levels.  He has also held an instructional appointment as the Commandant of the Australian Command and Staff College.  He graduated from this College (1985), as well as from the Royal Military College of Sciences (Shrivenham, 1983) and the Australian Centre for Defence and Strategic Studies (1996).


Since May 2004, General Gordon has been serving as Deputy Chief of the Army at the Australian Army headquarters.  Prior to that, in 2002, he served as head of the Army Training Command and in 2001 as Director-General, Future Land Warfare Branch.  From September 2001 until September 2002, he served in the United Nations Transitional Authority in East Timor (UNTAET) as Deputy Force Commander.  He served as the Australian Contingent Commander in the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) (1991-1992).


Born in 1952, General Gordon is married to Ula and they have three children.
