SECRETARY-GENERAL APPOINTS youssef mahmoud of tunisia


AS DEPUTY SPECIAL REPRESENTATIVE FOR burundi


The Secretary-General announced today the appointment of Youssef Mahmoud of Tunisia as his Deputy Special Representative for Burundi.


Mr. Mahmoud, who will also serve as United Nations Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator, as well as the United Nations Development Programme Resident Representative, has had a long and distinguished career with the United Nations.  He served most recently as the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Guyana.  Previously, he has served with the United Nations in various capacities, including as Director of the Africa II Division of the Department of Political Affairs; the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC); and in the Office of Human Resources and Management in New York.


Prior to joining the United Nations in 1981, Mr. Mahmoud worked as Assistant Professor of Linguistics at the University of Tunis, and asChairperson of the Bourguiba Institute of Modern Languages in Tunisia.


Mr. Mahmoud, who was born on 7 August 1947, holds a PhD in Linguistics from Georgetown University and an M.A. in American and British studies from the University of Tunis.  He is married and has two daughters.
