NEW STRATEGIES TO COUNTER TERRORISM DURING MAJOR EVENTS TO BE DISCUSSED

BY INTERNATIONAL EXPERTS AT MEETING IN TURIN (ITALY)


VIENNA, 13 June (UN Information Service) -- Specific strategies to prevent "terrorism during major events" will be discussed by a group of international experts at an upcoming meeting being held in Turin.  The "closed-door" meeting, "International Terrorism:  Prevention Strategies during Major Events.  Possible training programmes/Building public awareness for the upcoming Winter Olympic Games -- Turin 2006", is being organized by the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) and will take place on 17 June 2002, at the UNICRI headquarters in Turin, Italy.


Participants will include a number of high-level officials from Interpol, Europol, the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), United States Department of Justice Office for Domestic Preparedness, Headquarters Allied Forces Southern Europe, Swedish Defence Research Agency, Italian Carabinieri, the United Nations Terrorism Prevention Branch/Centre for International Crime Prevention (Vienna), an expert indicated by the International Olympic Committee, the Olympic Committee for the 2006 Winter Olympic Games, the Department of Political Affairs of the Italian Ministry  of Foreign  Affairs, the Italian Ministry of Public Function, the Office of the Prosecutor (Turin), the Centre for Studies on New Religions (CESNUR), and the BGS Advertisement Agency.


The goals of this meeting are threefold.  The first is to have an open discussion on the new terrorism prevention strategies during major events in the aftermath of the recent terrorist attacks.  The second objective of the day’s proceedings is to hold a brainstorming session on terrorism and public information, related to the Winter Olympic Games, Turin 2006.  The third goal of this initiative is a thorough analysis on a possible elaboration of specific training strategies for law enforcement and other agencies involved in the 2006 Turin event.


The meeting is part of the "International Terrorism Prevention Strategies during Major Events" initiative, funded by a local banking foundation, Compagnia di San Paolo.


The follow-up to this meeting will take place in November with an international symposium organized in Turin, in collaboration with Europol.
