COUNCIL EXTENDS SUSPENSION OF TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS ON UNITA OFFICIALS FOR 90 DAYS

Resolution Aims To Encourage Peace and Reconciliation in Angola

Aiming to encourage peace and national reconciliation in Angola, the Security Council decided this afternoon to extend for a further 90 days its 17 May suspension of travel restrictions on senior officials of the Uniao Nacional para a Independencia Total de Angole (UNITA).

Acting under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter, the Council unanimously adopted resolution 1432 (2002), tabled by the Troika -– Portugal, Russian Federation, United States.  The Council also decided that prior to the end of the 90-day period, it might consider reviewing its decision, taking into account all available information, including from the Angolan Government, on the "implementation of the Peace Accords".

The travel restrictions are contained in paragraphs 4 (a) and 4 (b) of resolution 1127 (1997).  Under the former, the Council decided that all States would prevent the entry into or transit through their territories of all senior UNITA officials and adult members of their immediate families, except those officials necessary for the full functioning of Angola's Government of National Unity and National Reconciliation and the National Assembly.

Under paragraph 4 (b) of that resolution, the Council decided that all States would suspend or cancel all travel documents, visas or residence permits issued to senior UNITA officials and adult members of their immediate families.

The meeting began at 12:11 p.m. and adjourned at 12:12 p.m.
