Biographical Note


NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF BRUNEI DARUSSALAM PRESENTS CREDENTIALS


Serbini Ali, the new Permanent Representative of Brunei Darussalam to the United Nations, presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Friday, 16 February.


Prior to his appointment, Mr. Ali was Executive Director of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Secretariat based in Singapore.  Before then, he was the Deputy Executive Director from 4 January to December 1999.


Other positions held by Mr. Ali include Director of Multilateral Economics Department of his country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1997-1998) and Deputy Director from 1992 to 1996.  He was Director of Politics (Asia and Pacific Affairs) of the Ministry from 1996 to 1997.


Mr. Ali, who joined the foreign service in the early eighties, served in various capacities in Brunei's embassies in Singapore (1982 to 1984), Bangkok (1984 to 1985) and Tokyo (1989 to 1992).  He was Deputy Director of the Protocol and Consular Affairs Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1986 to 1989, after holding the position of Assistant Director from 1985 to 1986.


He served as a member of Brunei's delegation to various international and regional meetings, including the Coordinators Meeting of the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries; Ministerial level meetings of the Organization of Islamic Conference; Ministerial and Leaders Meetings of the Asia and Pacific Economic Cooperation and meetings of the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN).


Born in on 10 April 1955 in Brunei Darussalam, Mr. Ali is married with four children.
