SECRETARY-GENERAL NAMES THORVALD STOLTENBERG CHAIR OF EXPERT GROUP TO REPORT ON HUMANITARIAN SITUATION IN IRAQ

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary- General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General has decided to designate Thorvald Stoltenberg of Norway, to serve as the Chairman of the group of independent experts to be appointed by the Secretary-General pursuant to Security Council resolution 1302 (2000) of 8 June 2000.

In paragraph 18 of the resolution, the Council invited the Secretary- General to appoint independent experts to prepare “a comprehensive report and analysis of the humanitarian situation in Iraq, including the current needs arising from the situation and recommendations to meet those needs, within the framework of the existing resolutions”.
