JOINT COMMISSION ESTABLISHED TO INVESTIGATE ALLEGATIONS OF EXTRAJUDICIAL EXECUTIONS IN TOGO

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary- General Kofi Annan:

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan and the Secretary-General of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), Salim Ahmed Salim, today announced the establishment of a joint United Nations-OAU International Commission of Inquiry into allegations that hundreds of people were victims of extrajudicial executions in Togo in 1998.

International experts Mahamat Hassan Abakar of Chad (Chairperson), Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah of Mauritania and Sergio Pinheiro of Brazil will make up the Commission.
