COMMITTEE ESTABLISHED BY COUNCIL RESOLUTION 751 (1992) ON SOMALIA MEETS TO EXCHANGE IDEAS FOR ENHANCING EFFECTIVENESS OF ARMS EMBARGO

19991222

The Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 751 (1992) concerning Somalia met on 20 December to exchange ideas on enhancing the effectiveness of the arms embargo and strengthening the work of the Committee. The meeting was held in the aftermath of the meeting of the Group of Friends of Somalia, held on 3 December, where calls were made to reinforce the sanctions regime in the case of Somalia, particularly in the light of the Djibouti initiative.

The members of the Committee viewed the effective implementation of the sanctions regime at this juncture as more necessary than ever in order to underline the firm commitment of the international community to establish a lasting peace in Somalia.

Members agreed to consider proposals made at the meeting and requested the outgoing Chairman, Ambassador Jassim Mohammed Buallay of Bahrain, to brief the incoming Chairman, to be elected in January 2000, on those proposals for subsequent action by the Committee.
