NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF ITALY PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Sergio Vento, the new Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations, today presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Prior to his appointment, he served as his country's Ambassador to France from November 1995.

From 1992 to 1995, Mr. Vento was Diplomatic Counsellor to the Prime Minister of Italy, and also served as representative at the Halifax (1995) and Lyon (1996) Summit meetings of the Group of Seven industrialized nations. Before that, he was Italian Ambassador to Yugoslavia from 1989 to 1992. Mr. Vento was named Ambassador in 1991.

Mr. Vento began his diplomatic career in 1963, serving in the Cabinet of the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs from 1963 to 1967. He was Second Secretary and ultimately First Secretary of the Italian Embassy at The Hague from 1967 to 1970. He served as Italian Consul in Buenos Aires from 1970 to 1972, and Counsellor at the Italian Embassy in Ankara from 1972 to 1975.

Recalled to the Italian Foreign Ministry, Mr. Vento served in the Near East and North African Political Affairs Office from 1975 to 1979. Following that assignment, Mr. Vento was First Counsellor with the Permanent Italian Delegation to the Organization for Cooperation and Development in Europe (OCDE) until 1985. Named Minister Plenipotentiary Second Class in 1985, he was again recalled to the Foreign Ministry, where he worked until 1987 in the Office of Economic Affairs (multilateral economic institutions) until 1987. Named Minister Plenipotentiary First Class in 1988, he was Diplomatic Counsel to Italy's Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister from 1987 until 1989.

Born on 30 May 1938, Mr. Vento holds a Masters degree in Political Science from the University of Rome. He is married, with two children.
